A Calgary Flames defenseman could be an option for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks as they continue to search for an addition to their top-four.

The Vancouver Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin are evaluating their options both in-house and on the trade market to address their top-four defensive group. There's no doubt the Canucks would like to add someone, but at this time of year, it's not always easy to make a big trade.

In recent weeks, the Canucks have been linked to a few defensemen including Rasmus Andersson of the Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh's Marcus Pettersson.

But could Patrik Allvin have a different player in mind, potentially someone who has term on his contract? It appears so.

Calgary's MacKenzie Weegar could be a target for Patrik Allvin.

MacKenzie Weegar of the Calgary Flames is another blueliner that could be of interest to Patrik Allvin, as Patrick Johnston of The Province suggested recently, citing that the Canucks' contending window is right now.

"Rasmus Andresson is one such player.

So is his teammate Mackenzie Weegar.

Weegar is the kind of player you trade for because your window is now. The Canucks window, let's be clear, is now." Patrick Johnston said.

Geoff Hannah of NHL Trade Rumor also believes that the also believes that Weegar would be a good option for the Vancouver Canucks.

"I've been watching Weegar closely for years, and he's exactly the type of player the Canucks need. He's an excellent skater with great vision and puck-moving skills. He can make the first pass out of the zone, he can join the rush, and he can quarterback a power play. In short, he's everything the Canucks are missing on defense" Geoff Hannah said.

One big issue that would come with acquiring MacKenzie Weegar is his contract situation. The 30-year-old is under contract for six more years following the 2024-25 season with a cap hit of $6.25 million. While the salary cap is expected to go up and it would be easier to manage in the coming years, the Canucks would need to move money out in order to make it work this season.
