Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin sends Arshdeep Bains & Erik Brannstrom back down to AHL Abbottsford
Just hours after Erik Brannstrom played the best game of the season, and Arshdeep Bains scored his first ever NHL goal, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has announced that he is sending the two youngsters back down to AHL Abbottsford.
To some, this could sound concerning, but in reality, this move is only on paper, and you can expect the pair to be in the lineup for their next game on Monday (October 28th) against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Why are the Vancouver Canucks sending Arshdeep Bains & Erik Brannstrom to AHL Abbottsford so often?
Many are asking what is the purpose of sending them down to the minors (on paper) so often? By doing these "Yo-Yo" moves, Vancouver can expand their cap due to the fact that each NHL clubs payroll is calculated on a daily basis. So essentially, by "sending them down", the Canucks will save a little on the cap.
This is all being done with the hopes that GM Patrik Allvin can make a big splash at the trade deadline later this season. Last year, the team acquired defenceman Nikita Zadorov and forward Elias Lindholm to bolster their playoff lineup. This is the second time that Patrik Allvin has done this as just this past Friday Bains and Brannstrom were sent down, but were back on the roster ready for the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night (October 26th).
Some fans have been pretty vocal online saying that with how well they are playing, they deserve the paycheck as well, and some don't even understand this is what the team is doing.
What do you think about NHL teams doing this to save on cap?
