The Vancouver Canucks returned home on Saturday night after a four-game road trip and hosted Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins at Rogers Arena. Saturday's contest marked the first night Canucks fans will see their team wearing the black Skate uniforms.
Before puck drop, the Vancouver Canucks honoured defenceman Tyler Myers after he played the 1,000th game of his National Hockey League career last Saturday in Philadelphia against the Flyers. Myers received his silver stick, which is given to every player once they reach the 1,000-game milestone, while his three children also got a special gift as well.
During the pre-game ceremony, fans noticed that Tyler Myers was sporting an 'A' on his jersey, which was a bit unusual because he's not an alternate captain for the Canucks. J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson are the Canucks' alternate captains and after the game, we got some heartwarming news as to why Tyler Myers was wearing an 'A'.
When speaking with reporters following the team's win over Pittsburgh, Rick Tocchet said that J.T. Miller decided to give up his 'A' for the game to Tyler Myers. According to Noah Strang of Daily Hive, Miller approached the team's equipment staff about having his 'A' put on Myers' jersey for the game.
As Tocchet said, this is a great gesture by J.T. Miller and it shows the type of leader he is. It was an important night for Tyler Myers, celebrating his 1,000th game in the National Hockey League with a pre-game ceremony and with his family in attendance. Being given an 'A' for the night by his teammate and friend J.T. Miller is something that Myers will remember for a very long time.
Myers and Miller would play a role in the Canucks win on Saturday night. The blueliner picked up his second assist of the season, while Miller added his fourth goal of the campaign as the Canucks won their fourth straight by a score of 4 to 3. Rick Tocchet's group will be back in action on Monday night as they host the Carolina Hurricanes.
