After leaving Thursday's game against Edmonton for undisclosed reasons, Vancouver Canucks fans were hoping to see forward Kiefer Sherwood in the lineup on Saturday against Washington, as he's on the verge of setting a new franchise record for most hits in a single season.
However, as the Canucks took to the ice for their morning skate, it looked like it was pretty unlikely he'd be suiting up and that ended up being the case, but Vancouver was able to pull off a 2-1 win thanks to two goals from captain Quinn Hughes.
The Canucks were back on the ice at Rogers Arena this morning as they prepare for a short three-game road trip beginning tomorrow night in St. Louis and afterwards, Rick Tocchet gave an update on Kiefer Sherwood.
With the Vancouver Canucks set to embark on that road trip, leaving the city on Sunday, head coach Rick Tocchet told reporters that Kiefer Sherwood won't be traveling with them today.
Tocchet did add that they're hoping he'll be able to join them at some point on the trip, with games in Nashville (Wednesday) and Dallas (Friday) to follow their battle with St. Louis.
Sherwood, a native of Columbus, Ohio has registered 21 points (13 goals, eight assists), 22 penalty minutes and is a minus-one in 47 games.
In those 47 games this season, Sherwood has a whopping 273 hits, which has him in first in the National Hockey League, 93 more than Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway.
Not only will Kiefer Sherwood have the Vancouver Canucks record for most hits in a single season, he's also on pace to smash the NHL record set by Jeremy Lauzon in 2023-24 when he had 383.
As Jeff Paterson said, Kiefer Sherwood likely had Wednesday's game against the Predators circled on his calendar ever since he signed in Vancouver as it would mark his return to Nashville, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he's back in lineup for that contest.
