After a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, the Vancouver Canucks returned to Rogers Arena on Saturday to take on Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, who are currently first place in the National Hockey League standings.
Saturday's game saw one lineup change, with Mark Friedman sitting out in favor of defensive prospect Elias Pettersson, who was making his National Hockey League debut against Washington.
Pettersson faired quite well last night, finishing the game with two hits, one blocked shot and was a plus-one in 10:30 of ice time.
With Pettersson's play last night, along with the impending return of defenseman Noah Juulsen, the Vancouver Canucks were forced to make a roster move on Sunday morning.
In a social media post on Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that defenseman Mark Friedman has been assigned to the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks.
Friedman, 29, has been up and down between Vancouver and Abbotsford four times in the last two months and in that time, has suited up for just six games in the National Hockey League.
In those five games with Vancouver, the Toronto, Ontario native has failed to register any points and has ten penalty minutes, along with a minus-four rating and four shots-on-goal.
Meanwhile in 20 games in the American Hockey League, Friedman has six points (one goal, five assists), 15 penalty minutes and is a plus-four.
It'll likely be a little while before we see Mark Friedman back in the National Hockey League as the Canucks will want him playing top-four minutes down in Abbotsford, especially with Elias Pettersson now up with the big club.
The Vancouver Canucks will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues. For fans looking to watch tomorrow's game, it'll only be available through the NHL's new Amazon Prime broadcast, with puck drop at 4:30 pm PT.
