During the second period, Swiss forward Nino Neiderreiter was holding the puck up against the boards with his skate and Canadian forward Joe Veleno was trying to get it out. Veleno then let his frustrations boil over and stomped on Neiderreiter's lower leg/ankle area, which somehow went uncalled by the officials.
Obviously frustrated, Neiderreiter and Veleno engaged in a cross-check battle that went from behind the net and which then continued in front of Canadian goaltender Samuel Montembeault. While in front of the net Neiderreiter caught Veleno up high and got the only penalty on the play, two minutes for roughing.
There's no doubt that the IIHF Disciplinary Panel will be taking a look at this and it's very likely that Veleno won't be in Canada's lineup for their next game on Monday at 9:20 a.m. ET/6:20 a.m. PT against Norway.
Nino Neiderreiter got a penalty here for roughing, but Joe Veleno got away with that stomp. The Swiss fans were furious.
