It's been rumoured for about a week now that the Toronto Maple Leafs and defenceman Luke Schenn were working towards a contract extension, but now both sides are not close on a new deal and it appears that he'll be hitting the open market on July 1st.

"Luke Schenn and the Maple Leafs are not close, as I was told, to a contract." Rick Dhaliwal said. "Keep an eye on him if he hits free agency. Let's see if it happens."

Schenn, 33, was dealt to Toronto by the Canucks in late-February for a 2023 third-round pick. He's had two separate stints with the Canucks, during the 2018-19 season and then again from 2021 to 2023, so it's certainly possible that when Canada Day rolls around, Schenn could find his way back to Vancouver.

The Canucks could certainly use Schenn's big body on the blueline once again for next season and potentially beyond. It likely wouldn't cost Patrik Allvin much more than the $850,000 he was earning on his most recent contract.
