MAJOR | NHL scout on Connor Bedard: The Hype is getting out of control
In a recent interview on The Athletic, NHL scouts and executives were asked questions about top prospects eligible for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
When talking about the consensus number one overall pick from the Regina Pats (WHL), Connor Bedard, one scout had some interesting comments, saying that the hype surrounding the young phenom is 'out of control'.
"I worry the hype on him is getting a little out of control. He's No. 1, he's the guy, amazing player, but I'm not sure I'm projecting him to be like an immediate top 5-10 player in the league or something. He's not McDavid. I still think you're getting someone who could have a Patrick Kane-type of career though if he hits." The scout said. For what Bedard has done so far, especially in his draft year, the hype is certainly warranted. He's broken Canadian World Junior records for most goals and points, as well as for most points in a single tournament. With his junior club, the Regina Pats, the North Vancouver native put up 143 points (71 goals, 72 assists) in 57 games and followed that up by recording 20 points in seven playoff games.
While this scout isn't denying Bedard's talent at all, he's likely wanting readers and hockey fans in general to temper their expectations just a tad and to not think he's going to jump into the NHL right away and become a top-five player.
Do you think the NHL scout has a point when saying the hype surrounding Bedard is 'out of control'? Let us know your opinion in the poll below!
