MAJOR | The heartbreaking reasons for Patrice Bergeron insistance to play the last regular season game in Montreal revealed
Patrice Bergeron has been with the Boston Bruins for the entirety of his career, captaining the Original Six franchise along the way. Bergeron is not unfamiliar with the mediatic scrutiny especially since the Bruins broke an NHL record for the most wins during the regular season.
The Bruins were in Montreal for the final game of their season and the belief was that Bergeron, who had sustained an injury, would've taken a night off to recover days prior to the start of the playoffs. Bergeron however opted to take a different road as the veteran insisted that he'd be in the lineup in Montreal, he ended up aggravating an injury that prevented him from playing in his team's first two playoffs game.
The latest reports on the matter actually revealed the cause of Bergeron's decision, and it's heartbreaking:
''Patrice Bergeron's father is battling cancer. He wanted to play in front of his father in Montreal for possibly the last time. Even wanted to go back out there after he went to the room. I'm told that doesn't matter. Shouldn't have played. Wow. I'm stunned and at a loss for words.''
Bergeron is a Quebec City native Montreal was the only destination where he could share this special occasion and it was an immensely emotional night for the Bruins' veteran. We want to send our best wishes and hope for a speedy recovery.
Bergeron signed a team-friendly one-year contract for $2.5M in order to help the Bruins chase the biggest honors once more. The 37-year-old veteran delivered big time as he managed 58 points in 78 games.
Through 19 NHL seasons, 1294 regular season games, the B's captain managed 1040 points, 1 Stanley Cup, 5 Selke, 1 Mark Messier, 1 King Clancy along with multiple awards on the international stage.
