Patrik Laine has been the focus of many recent trade conversations, but according to renowned NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, a trade is finally in the works.

Traction on a significant trade for Patrik Laine

According to Elliotte Friedman, the 2016 second-overall pick is headed to the Montreal Canadiens.

Canadiens commit a robbery

The Montreal Canadiens acquired Laine and a second-round pick in exchange for Jordan Harris.

Jordan Harris, a promising defenseman, was selected 71st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2018 NHL Draft. Known for his strong skating and defensive acumen, Harris has steadily transitioned to the NHL level. During the 2022-2023 season, he played 65 games for the Canadiens, recording 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) and demonstrating his potential as a reliable two-way defenseman. Harris's development is closely watched as he grows into a regular NHL contributor for Montreal, balancing defensive duties with offensive upside.

Patrik Laine, a Finnish winger, was drafted 2nd overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2016 NHL Draft. Known for his elite goal-scoring ability, Laine quickly made an impact, notching 36 goals in his rookie season. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated consistent offensive production, which was highlighted by a 44-goal season in 2017-18. In 2022-23, Laine recorded 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists) in 55 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Despite injury challenges, Laine remains a critical offensive threat, continuing to be a cornerstone player for the Blue Jackets as he develops his game.

It's a deal with significant upside for the Canadiens. Amid a rebuild, they have plenty of cap room to take his hefty cap hit and the margin for error that could allow Laine to find his confidence and his game back. Under the former NHL star Martin St. Louis, the Canadiens hope he'll regain his groove and return to being the player once viewed as good as Auston Matthews.
