BREAKING | Former Bruins forward and Red Wings head coach passes away at age 80
Some sad news to report on in the hockey world this weekend as former Boston Bruins forward and Detroit Red Wings head coach Wayne Maxner has passed away at the age of 80.
Maxner began his professional career in 1963-64 as a member of the Minneapolis Bruins. He spent the majority of his playing career in the minor league, but appeared 62 games for Boston during the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons where he recorded 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) and 48 penalty minutes.
After retiring, the Halifax native turned his attention to coaching, mainly in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires and London Knights, but also was behind the bench for the Detroit Red Wings for two seasons. During his time in Detroit, the Red Wings missed the Stanley Cup both years, only winning 34 games of the 129 games he coached.
Our thoughts are with Maxner's friends and family at this difficult time.
