On Friday afternoon, the New York Islanders placed former first-rounder Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers and there was some hope that the Vancouver Canucks would have tried to claim him, but that wasn't the case.
On Saturday afternoon, the Boston Bruins revealed that they claimed Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders.
Wahlstrom, 24, was selected 11th overall in the first round by the New York Islanders in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and has spent the last four seasons, plus the start of the 2024-25 campaign in the National Hockey League.
However, Wahlstrom hasn't lived up to the expectations that come with being a first-round pick in the National Hockey League and the Islanders likely knew that his time in the organization was coming to an end when they placed him on the waiver wire.
So far this season, the Portland, Maine native has registered four points (two goals, two assists), nine penalty minutes and was a minus-six in 27 games with the Islanders.
While it would've been interesting to see the Vancouver Canucks claim Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers, Patrik Allvin likely wanted to keep players like Max Sasson and Aatu Raty on the NHL roster, and could look to address depth through trade in the coming months.
Oliver Wahlstrom is expected to make his Boston Bruins debut on Tuesday night as the team continues their road trip by taking on the Calgary Flames.
