The New Jersey Devils have been monitoring the Markstrom situation for a little over three months now. They reportedly tried to acquire him before the trade deadline in March, but weren't able to and shifted their focus to Jake Allen of the Montreal Canadiens.
Over the weekend, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman linked Jacob Markstrom to a pair of Canadian teams - Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, in addition to the Devils.
Many have been wondering what it would cost to acquire the veteran goaltender from Calgary and it appears that we have our answer, thanks to Bruch Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen.
Garrioch says that a league executive told him the Calgary Flames would likely want a package featuring a first-round pick, as well as a high-end prospect in any trade involving Jacob Markstrom. Given Markstrom's age and his cap hit of $6 million for the next two seasons, that seems like a massive ask from the Flames.
The Gavle, Sweden native appeared in 48 games this season for the Calgary Flames where he had a record of 23-23-2 along with a 2.78 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and two shutouts.
