In breaking news, the Detroit Red Wings have decided to part ways with head coach Derek Lalonde, hiring veteran coach Todd McLellan to take his place for the remainder of the season.
It has been a disappointing season to say the least for the Detroit Red Wings, and executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman is doing everything he can to try and salvage what's left.
Derek Lalonde fired by Detroit Red Wings
Although more times than not it is not the fault of the head coach, it becomes common practice in the NHL that the head coach, in this case Derek Lalonde, becomes the scape goat for change.
As Lalonde's replacement, Yzerman has decided to hire veteran head coach Todd McLellan, who last coached in the NHL during the 203-2024 season, ending his 5-year tenure as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings.
Associated coach Bob Boughner was also fired and Trent Yawney was hired to work on McLellan's staff as an assistant. McLellan signed a multiyear contract to start his fourth NHL head coaching job after stints with San Jose, Edmonton and Los Angeles. - Sportsnet
McLellan is one of the best options the Red Wings could have hired, he has a long history of success, leading his teams to the playoffs in 9 out of his 14 career seasons.
Every season, they are a plethora of firings around the league, and with exit of Lalonde, it marks the fourth coaching change.
Rick Bowness' retirement in Winnipeg. The Boston Bruins in November fired Jim Montgomery, who was hired by the St. Louis Blues less than a week later, and the Chicago Blackhawks replaced Luke Richardson with Anders Sorensen in early December.
Hopefully the change of voice in the room for the Red Wings will do them good, as they've lost 21 of their 34 games this season, only performing better than the Buffalo Sabres in the East.
