A dangerous scene occurred during Monday night's game between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers.

Nearly halfway through the third period, Boston Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy was given a match penalty for a hit to the head of Florida Panthers defenceman and former Vancouver Canuck, Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

After Ekman-Larsson clears the puck from in front of his net, McAvoy catches the Swedish defenceman in the head with his shoulder.

It's clear to see in the video below that McAvoy intended to injure Ekman-Larsson and that the principal point of contact was hitting his head.

"Charlie McAvoy has been given a 5-minute match penalty for this hit on Oliver Ekman-Larsson."

Ekman-Larsson fell to the ice after the hit but eventually got up under his power and returned to the Panthers' bench. Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice said Ekman-Larsson was talking and looked 'OK' before being pulled from the game.

And now, on Tuesday morning, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has announced that Charlie McAvoy will have a hearing for the hit to the head of Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

"Boston's Charlie McAvoy will have a hearing today for an Illegal Check to the Head/Interference on Florida's Oliver Ekman-Larsson."
