John Tavares' future in Toronto sealed: Maple Leafs to announce massive change
After another heartbreaking playoff elimination, change was expected in Toronto. While many believed that Sheldon Keefe would be the Maple Leafs' main move, the change didn't stop there.
According to Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs will make it official on Wednesday. Still, the team has removed the captaincy from long-time team leader John Tavares and will be handing the infamous 'C' over to Matthews :
After scoring 69 goals in 2023-2024 and signing the NHL's richest contract, Auston Matthews made it clear that he'd be the Maple Leafs offensive leader.
John Tavares' future with the Maple Leafs in Jeopardy?
The veteran Tavares joined the Maple Leafs during the 2018 free-agency frenzy. Despite being terrific during the regular season, the Toronto team has not made it further than the second Round.
The Leafs' number 91 will have to renegotiate the terms of his deal since his current contract will expire by the end of the season. Is being stripped away from captaincy an indicator that your time is ending?
Tavares will turn 34 in September but remains an effective and constant player. He produced 65 points in 2023-2024. While this change is likely not the end of his career, it could very well be the end of his time with the Maple Leafs.
