The riots were so insane that it is etched all over the city. Filmmakers Kathleen Jayme and Asia Youngman created an ESPN 30 for 30 films on the craziness of the riots entitled "I'm Just Here for the Riot." This week, it will debut at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF).
The documentary explores the different levels of complexity that took place on the days of the riot. It follows people on their separate journeys and the aftermath of the riot. The 2011 riot had a large mix of bystanders and rioters. Despite the adverse decisions from the rioters that night, many bystanders stood by the rioters.
Kathleen Jayme said
"I think one of the things that surprised me is that those who were hurt, physically hurt, in the riot didn't want to press charges...For them, the best way to move forward was to forgive and move onand that was such a surprise to me."
Vancouverites will never forget June 15th, 2011. The day that the city was on fire. This 30 for 30 will provide context to the riots that took place.
