LATEST | Elias Pettersson's agent provides update on contract negotiations
Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson was eligible to sign a contract extension as of Saturday, July 1st and this week, his agent JP Barry provided an update on negotiations while on the Donnie & Dhali show.
Barry said that while initial talks have occurred, he expects things to pick up later this summer and into September before the start of training camp.
""We had some initial talks with the team just about timing only," Barry said. "We had a really rough free agent market the last little while and the draft. It's something that will get started up again later this summer, but I think right now we've just got to get through this period."
He added, "We're all going to take a bit of a break here. When we get through July, it's been a long, long year. If we do it, it'll probably be later in the summer. Anything is possible, but we've done that several times before where we've gone through the summer and had meetings in early September before camps start up."
Pettersson, 24, will be entering the final year of his contract in the 2023-24 season which sees him earn $7.35 million AAV. There's a good chance that the average annual value on Pettersson's next contract will be north of $9 million, especially given how he's played over the last two seasons, last campaign in particular.
In 80 games last season, the Sundsvall, Sweden native put up 102 points (39 goals, 63 assists), 14 penalty minutes and was a plus-16.
