LATEST | Former Canuck Sven Baertschi opens up about his decision to retire
Former Vancouver Canucks forward Sven Baertschi was a guest on Donnie & Dhali last week and opened up about his decision to retire from professional hockey.
"I think it was just over time, like the last couple of years, injuries and things like that kinda were bugging me, and it was too much of an effort to play each game. Yeah, you know, neck, head things, and I just had to let go of it. I want to be around my kids and be a good parent, so that's the biggest thing."
Baertschi also discussed the concussions he's dealt with throughout his career and says he is doing 'okay' currently and has great people looking after him in Portland.
The 31-year-old announced his retirement from hockey during the summer after spending the final year playing in his home country of Switzerland with SC Bern. He spent parts of six seasons in the NHL with the Canucks and became a favourite among the fanbase pretty quickly, especially after recording back-to-back years of 15+ goals.
All of us at Canucks Daily continue to wish Sven Baertschi all the best in retirement, and we hope to see him around the game in an off-ice role in the years to come!
