LATEST | Insider believes Pettersson will re-sign with Canucks under one condition
Elias Pettersson's contract status is still a hot topic around hockey, as the 24-year-old is in the final year of his current deal and is set to become a restricted free agent next summer.
Pettersson has stated that he wants to wait before signing a new deal and isn't in a rush to put pen to paper, which has caused some fans to worry that he will leave the organization next summer. That likely won't be the case, especially given his importance to the Canucks; they'll offer him a contract he won't be able to refuse.
During Monday's edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said that he believes Pettersson will remain with the Vancouver Canucks beyond this season if the organization can prove to him that they're heading in the right direction and can win the Stanley Cup during his career there.
"The impression I got from my interview with Elias Pettersson was he wants to play somewhere where winning matters. And he knows he can get that in Vancouver. If they can prove to him that they're trending in the right direction, I believe he will sign"
The Sundsvall, Sweden native is having a fantastic start to the new season. In five games, Pettersson has ten points (two goals, eight assists), no penalty minutes and is a plus-five.
