LATEST | Pettersson's agent Pat Brisson updates on the halt: Gives his client's timeline
The Vancouver Canucks wanted to get star forward Elias Pettersson under contract before the 2023-24 season began, but unfortunately that won't be happening.
Pettersson said a few weeks ago that he wanted to put contract negotiations on the back burner for now, that way he can solely focus on preparing for the new season.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Pettersson's agent Pat Brisson gave a brief update about his client and where things stand as of mid-September.
"He does want to be patient..He's excited about how things are going recently, and he wants to absorb and make some decisions probably toward the end of the season and see how things are gonna go."
The 24-year-old Pettersson could be looking at a massive pay raise on his next contract, potentially upwards of $12 million AAV and he's hoping to solidify that jump in salary with another monster season for the Vancouver Canucks. It's also unclear as of now what type of contract Pettersson could be looking for next summer, whether that be a long-term deal or a bridge or potentially even a one-year extension, although the latter seems pretty unlikely.
The NHL's salary cap is expected to jump significantly next summer ahead of the 2024-25 season, potentially as high as $3-3.5 million, which would really help the Canucks if Pettersson puts up another 100-point season and wants $12 million AAV or more.
Last season, Pettersson appeared in 80 games for the Canucks and racked up 102 points (39 goals, 63 assists) as well as 14 penalty minutes and was a plus-16.
