MAJOR | The Canucks won the Nikita Tolopilo derby: The undrafted free agent chose the Canucks for a specific reason
The Canucks have been building a reputation for themselves recently as a prime destination for free agents.
They've succeeded on multiple occasions, from Nils Aman to the superstar Andrei Kuzmenko and now perhaps an NHL goaltender in the making. 23, there's loads of untapped potential with the Belarus native. At 6'6'', it's safe to say he is quite the giant in front of the net.
In an interview during the team's development camp, Tolopilo revealed that many teams were trying to get him signed, and he proceeded to reveal the reason why he chose to commit to the Canucks:
"There were some NHL teams to choose from, and the biggest reason why I chose Vancouver was because of Ian [Clark]. I'm super excited to work with him and Marko [Torenius]. I really believe that will help me to make another couple of steps in my development."
The Canucks have been winning free-agent derbies a lot recently due to their staff and the culture they're currently trying to build. Tolopilo is expected to compete for one of the two spots in Abbotsford alongside Arturs Silovs, Spencer Martin and the newly acquired Zach Sawchenko.
