Stanley Cup Winner Ian Cole reveals why he chose to sign with the Canucks
After the Canucks elected to buy out the remainder of Oliver Ekman-Larsson's contract, Patrik Allvin went on a shopping spree. He added experienced low-cost defensemen hoping to fix last year's defensive issues.
FORMER STANLEY CUP CHAMPION TO LEAD THE WAY
Inked to a one-year, $3M deal, the 34-year-old Ian Cole comes to Vancouver with his fair share of baggage, which included two Stanley Cups and nine consecutive playoff runs.
Frank Seravalli had the opportunity to interview the veteran, and his response points to a brighter future in Vancouver:
"Every year for the last nine years his team has made the playoffs...'why the #Canucks?' was the first Q I asked him...he got a sense from them on July 1 that they're sick of losing."
THE OBLIVIOUS PENGUINS CONNECTION
It's evident that Cole's connection to the Pittsburgh Penguins came into play, the veteran was part of their back-to-back Cups in 2016 and 2017, and he definitely knows what it takes to win.
Over the last four seasons, Cole was notably a part of the Colorado Avalanche, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes who have all been dominant forces in the NHL for a few years. If he carries his experience and teaches the younger Canucks, his play may not wind up being the most important thing he brings to the table.
