Analyst makes concerning statement on three defencemen's future
As the Vancouver Canucks gear for an anticipated second-round matchup against the Edmonton Oilers, the team is confidently riding their defensive solid core consisting of Norris Trophy favourite Quinn Hughes, breakout defender Filip Hronek, and the towering Tyler Myers, among others. As the team will have to renew some contracts in the offseason and beyond, it has become apparent that their current defence group may not be able to stick together.
This conundrum is highlighted by Filip Hronek's contract expiring this season. He is due for a significant pay raise and has been rumoured to be commanding a deal of $8 million annually.
According to Sekeres and Price, the prospect of the Canucks reaching a deal within that price range is unlikely.
The answer is becoming more obvious, and it's NOT keeping Filip Hronek..if he wants $8M, there's no way you're sticking with that.
The focus of Hronek is likely on the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Canucks are set to play their first game past the first round since 2020 on Wednesday and will have to revisit contract negotiations in due time following the end of the team's season (whenever that may be). He is poised to log heavy minutes, likely only behind Hughes among team defensemen, and will look to be a difference-maker in this critical second-round matchup.
