Brännström Finding His Groove in Vancouver: "It Feels Like Home"
For Erik Brännström, his journey to the Vancouver Canucks has been transformative. After a whirlwind few weeks before joining the team, the 25-year-old Swedish defenseman feels a strong sense of belonging.
«It feels like it was meant to be,» Brännström shared. «I really like the city, my teammates, the coaches, and how we play. It just feels great that I've ended up here.»
Brännström's path to Vancouver began as the 15th overall pick by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. He was later traded to the Ottawa Senators, where he played 266 games before his Canucks debut on October 17. Since joining the team, his speed, skill, and composure have solidified the defense corps, particularly in his partnership with 6'7» Vincent Desharnais.
«Having good chemistry with your defense partner is so important,» Brännström explained. «Vinny talks a lot, which helps. Our games complement each other and make us better together.»
Confidence has been key to Brännström's evolution with the Canucks. While always aware of his skill, working with the coaching staff-especially defense-focused mentors like Adam Foote and Sergei Gonchar-has bolstered his self-belief.
«Footer and Gonch have been great. They don't just tell you what to work on but show you how to improve. It's been a huge help for me,» he said.
Head coach Rick Tocchet praised Brännström's versatility, noting his ability to contribute offensively, especially during critical moments like offensive zone draws.
«His creativity and mobility give us options,» Tocchet remarked. «He's been taking in what we're teaching and improving every game.»
Brännström's journey to finding his fit with the Canucks has been supported by familiar faces, including fellow Swede Nils Höglander. Their decade-long friendship adds a personal touch to his Vancouver experience, with fond memories of hockey camps in Sweden where Brännström, surprisingly, once played goalie.
As Brännström continues to grow in confidence and skill, his contributions to the Canucks' lineup are becoming more noticeable, continuing to prove that Vancouver is where he belongs.
