It was announced yesterday by general manager Patrik Allvin that 28-year-old defenseman Mark Friedman was placed on waivers for the sake of sending him down to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League, but before that could happen he would have to clear waivers.
It was confirmed just moments ago that Friedman had indeed Cleared waivers
and will start the season in the minors.
Even though this might not be the outcome Friedman wanted, the one major positive is that he showcased his talents with a strong preseason and will be utilized through out the year when injuries and scratches emerge. The Canuck's have much needed depth that is necessary for a deep playoff run, and if that occurs, do not be surprised to see Friedman's name in the near future.
Friedman appeared in 3 games, where he collected one assist, recorded four shots on goal and took and 7 penalty minutes, 5 minutes of which were in a major tussle with one Brandon Tanev.
Entering tonight's contest against the Calgary Flames in the seasonopner, the Canucks will have seven d-men dressed which includes captain Quinn Hughes, Filip Hronek, Carson Soucy, Tyler Myers, Vincent Desharnais, Derek Forbort and Noah Juulsen.
