Canucks linked to five trade targets: Allvin looking to bolster the blueline?
Five defenceman have been listed as potential trade targets for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks in a recent article on The Athletic this week.
The Vancouver Canucks' roster is pretty much set for the start of the 2024-25 season, but there still could be a small addition or two in the coming weeks and month and bringing in a defenceman could be on Patrik Allvin's radar throughout the year.
In an offseason mailbag article on The Athletic, Thomas Drance was asked if there was any defenceman that he'd target as potential options for the Vancouver Canucks and he named five from around the National Hockey League.
The first two Drance named were a pair of teammates in Calgary - Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar.
"Looking through various teams and some situations that could be on our radar over the next six to 12 months, a few names stand out.
First off, there's a pair of Calgary Flames right-handed defenders in Rasmus Andersson and, to a lesser extent, MacKenzie Weegar. The Flames have been dismantling their roster for months now, accumulating futures often from the Canucks and looking to long-term organizational planning." Drance said.
Drance also listed Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues; Adam Larsson of the Seattle Kraken and Neal Pionk of the Winnipeg Jets as players he'd target to add to the Canucks' blueline. He says that if either Seattle or Winnipeg fall out of the playoff race, Larsson and Pionk could be options on the rental market, while Colton Parayko could be an interesting fit, but might be risky because his offensive output has declined and he'll be nearly 37 by the time his contract expires.
"Seattle Kraken blueliner Adam Larsson and Winnipeg Jets defender Neal Pionk are right-handed top-four types on expiring deals. If either team falls out of the race, they'd be potential rentals to monitor. Larsson is probably the better fit, but would also be the more expensive player to acquire. In contrast, Pionk struggled this past season and might come with a reclamation target price tag if his form last season persists into this year.
Finally, jumbo-sized St. Louis Blues defender Colton Parayko has been linked to trade rumours over the past 12-18 months. The Blues seem to be retooling but have so much cap space locked into their blue line, and nearly all of those blueliners have some measure of say in their future given their trade protection structure. Parayko would be an interesting fit, albeit a risky one, given his offensive impact has fallen off over the past few seasons and he's signed with term through his age-35 campaign." Drance said.
Excluding Weegar (because it seems unlikely he'd be traded by Calgary), which defenceman do you think would be a better fit for the Vancouver Canucks - Rasmus Andersson, Colton Parayko, Adam Larsson or Neal Pionk? Let us know what you think in the poll below.
