Elias Pettersson Crosses the Line with Lousy Excuses For His Struggles

The Vancouver Canucks had a pretty poor performance in Utah last night, falling 2-1, losing their second game in as many days and Elias Pettersson had to face the media afterwards, but was not happy about doing so.
Elias Pettersson has struggled mightily at times this season and when you're playing in a Canadian market, combined with making over $11 million annually, there's going to be a lot of pressure to perform and so far, he hasn't been doing that, registering 19 goals dating back to February 1st, 2024.

The 26-year-old picked up an assist during last night's game in Salt Lake City, Utah, finishing the game with no shots on goal in 18:11 of ice time.
When speaking with reporters after the loss, Pettersson was asked if confidence has played a factor in him not being able to find the back of the net this season and he gave a pretty lousy answer.
"It's more annoying dealing with the media." Pettersson said according to Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre.
Sure, Elias Pettersson is probably frustrated with the questions about his struggles, but until he turns things around, he's going to keep getting asked about it because frankly, as the 5th highest player in the National Hockey League, he should be well over a point-per-game player and right now, he's at 0.68 points-per-game.
On Monday's edition of Halford and Brough The Athletic's Thomas Drance spoke about Elias Pettersson's comments from last night and called it an appalling answer and that the fans deserve better.
"The truth is, you're either going to provide us with the ability to tell your story or if you're going to answer a question like Pettersson did, you're going to give us an opportunity to say what we think, right? Like that's it. Generally speaking, players are best served by just being as honest and polite as possible. It's a five minute interview, it's not a huge part of your day. Putting media in a position to tell your story as best they can and Pettersson refused to do that last night and he's refused to do that on multiple instances this season and as a result, we don't have any idea on what's actually going on in terms of his game." Drance said.
He went on to add, "I just don't get it. I don't think that's the way champions carry themselves in the media."

It's hard to figure out where the Vancouver Canucks should go from here with Elias Pettersson as his poor play this season and high salary would make it difficult to trade him before March 7th, but perhaps they could look at doing something at the draft before his no-movement clause kicks in on July 1st.
However, in order to get a return that Patrik Allvin would be happy and comfortable with, they'll need Elias Pettersson to turn things around in a big way and with only four games left before the trade deadline and 25 remaining in the regular season, it's going to be tough for the Sundsvall, Sweden native to prove his worth as an $11.6 million player.
