The Vancouver Canucks have their own free agents
including centerman Pius Suter and
Brock Boeser that they'll try to get locked up before July 1st, but elsewhere around the league some teams are getting business done early.
One of those teams that's opted to get ahead of the curve with their own free agents is the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals, who on Wednesday have signed a former Vancouver Canuck.
Washington Capitals, Nic Dowd agree to multi-year contract extension
In a post on their official website, the Washington Capitals announced that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $6 million USD ($3 million AAV) with forward Nic Dowd.
Dowd, 34, has spent the last seven seasons of his National Hockey League career with the Washington Capitals, providing the club with a reliable, two-way bottom-six option that can be used on the penalty kill.
Washington Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick commented on the signing, saying that they're excited to have Nic Dowd under contract for two more years and that he has been an integral part of the organization on and off the ice.
"Nic has been an integral member of our team, both on the ice and in our leadership group, and we are excited to extend his contract for an additional two years.
During his time in Washington, Nic has proven to be a consistent and reliable two-way player who can be trusted in all situations. This signing solidifies our depth at the critical center position as we move forward.
Off the ice, Nic has been a consummate professional and has made significant contributions to our community through his charitable efforts." Patrick said.
The Huntsville, Alabama native was
acquired by the Vancouver Canucks in December 2017 in exchange for defenseman Jordan Subban and went on to spent the rest of the '17-18 season with the club, registering three goals, 16 penalty minutes and was a minus-seven in 40 games.
This season, Dowd has appeared in all 81 of Washington's games, where he's set new career highs in games and points. In those 81 games, he's put up 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists), 56 penalty minutes and is a plus-eight.
