Flyers exploring options for Cam Atkinson: Canucks a potential fit?
The off-season is the time of the year when teams make their most significant moves, and since the season has ended for the league's vast majority a number of names have been circulating in the trade rumours.
The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly exploring options for veteran forward Cam Atkinson. He is entering the final year of his contract, and according to Darren Dreger, a buyout is a legitimate option in addition to holding onto him should nothing come to fruition. He also noted that the San Jose Sharks are interested.
''The Flyers continue to explore options around veteran Cam Atkinson. SJ has trade interest, but sources say Atkinson isn't keen on a move to the Sharks. Philly will eat a good chunk of the final year of his contract. Buyout is also an option, as is keeping him in the mix.''
Atkinson fell off a cliff offensively in 2023-24, posting just 13 goals and 28 points in 70 games his lowest goal total through an entire season and the first of his career below a 0.5 point-per-game pace. He topped out at 41 goals and 69 points in 2018-19 and recorded an even 50 points in 2022-23.
Perhaps the veteran could be a potential fit on the Canucks roster, as there remains uncertainty surrounding the futures of Elias Lindholm and Dakota Joshua, among others. He will almost certainly receive far less money on his next contract.
Vancouver has several forward prospects looking to jump to the NHL full-time, such as Arshdeep Bains and Jonathan Lekkerimaki. It could be entirely possible that Canucks management passed on Atkinson to make room for younger players. Time will tell where Atkinson will land, if anywhere at all.
