Former Canuck attempting a return to the NHL: Second rounder granted another opportunity
Yet another former Vancouver Canuck has popped up as a name looking to earn a contract this preseason, as Madison Bowey has signed a PTO with the New York Rangers.
Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal broke the news on Wednesday afternoon that the 29 year old would be eyeing an NHL return after spending last season in Russia split between three KHL teams.
Bowey played just 2 games in 2021/22 with Vancouver, but spent most of that year as a top defenceman in AHL Abbotsford. He spent 2022-23 in AHL Laval before taking his talents overseas last season, scoring a combined 14 points in 51 games split between three teams.
Once a highly touted defensive prospect picked in the second round by Washington, Bowey has struggled to find a home for very long in the NHL - seeing the most success with a 53 game 17 point season with Detroit in 2019/20. Since then, Bowey has appeared in just 4 NHL games - 50% of which were with the Canucks. Turning 30 at the end of the season, can this be the season where he finally establishes himself as an NHL regular?
Bowey performed for three different KHL teams during the 2023-2024 campaign, he participated in 51 regular season games and collected a total of 14 points.
