The passing of Adam Johnson shocked the hockey world and led to several leagues and teams around the globe to
make neck protection mandatory for their players.
Former Vancouver Canucks farmhand won't face any criminal charges
In the weeks following the incident, the South Yorkshire Police in England
arrested a former Vancouver Canucks farmhand, Matt Petgrave, whose skate made contact with Adam Johnson's neck on that tragic day in October 2023.
Petgrave, who spent parts of two seasons in the Vancouver Canucks organization playing for their AHL affiliate at the time in Utica,
was re-bailed on a number of occasions including in November 2024, one year after his arrest on the suspicion of manslaughter.
On Tuesday, the Crown Prosecution Service, who worked in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Police in this case, released a statement announcing that Matt Petgrave will not be facing any criminal charges.
"We have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution.
This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident.
The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved.
Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson." Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor, said according to the BBC.
With the case now closed, Matt Petgrave can now begin the process of healing from this tragic event and try his best to start rebuilding his life, whether he decides to return to professional hockey or not.
The thoughts of everyone here at Canucks Daily remain with the family, friends and teammates of Adam Johnson.
