LATEST | Canucks make one thing clear in Elias Pettersson's extension talks
After being presented with a legitimate trade offer from the Carolina Hurricanes, the Canucks are finally sitting down with Elias Pettersson to negotiate a new deal.
Insider Rick Dhaliwal says the team is making it clear that they want to lock up their star as long as possible.
The Canucks don't want 3 or 4 years with Pettersson, they don't want to go through this again in 3 or 4 years,
Dhaliwal said the Canucks were "petrified" of having a situation like the Calgary Flames two years ago with Tkachuk and Gaudreau, and so essentially strong-armed Pettersson back to the table.
The insider says the Canucks would lose any Pettersson deal as they'd be giving up the best player, and a long term extension has always been their focus.
