With General Manager Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks refusing to make any significant moves during this years jam packed NHL trade deadline, a new proposal has emerged that indicates they could be breaking one of NHL's unwritten rules.

After the lack of initiative, and even being ranked as having the worst performance at this years deadline, Allvin came out publicly to try and put the fan base at ease.
He told the media that when it comes to the offseason, they will 100% addressing their needs down the middle of the ice, whether it will be via signing a free agent, a trade or offer sheeting a young star.

Vancouver Canucks to offer sheet Anaheim Ducks centre Mason McTavish

With the Canucks being a Canadian market, it is difficult to attract free agents to the organization, which has Allvin looking to make drastic decisions.
If the Canucks are potentially losing Brock Boeser to free agency this offseason, they will need to address his replacement, which could come in the form of an offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks star forward Mason McTavish.
The former 3rd overall pick is blossoming into a elite 2-way centreman, but would take a whole new step forward on a team that actually has players he could bounce off of.
The tricky part is that he is an upcoming Restricted Free Agent (RFA) for the Anaheim Ducks.
He is comparable to a young Sam Bennett, playing physical, leading a team and scoring 4 straight, 40 point seasons.
But what is the deal with the unwritten rule of not putting in offer sheets?
There is a stigma currently in the NHL where general managers do not want to step on any toes of other teams in fear of breaking relationships or fear of retaliation, that out of spite, teams will go after their rookies as well.
It is why you do not see it as often in today's NHL.
But, at the end of the day, GM's like Allvin need to step up and forget about this ridiculous perception.
The Canucks needs a centreman, and if an offer sheet is the way to go, then they need to do what is necessary.
