NHL issues a statement on captain Quinn Hughes and the Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks are officially in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs after clinching a spot on Saturday night thanks to losses by the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues.
In a post on their public relations account on X, the National Hockey League shared a statement on Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes, saying that this spring, he can become only the third American-born captain to hoist the Stanley Cup.
"In his first season as captain, Quinn Hughes will lead the @Canucks into their first postseason appearance since 2020 when he set a #StanleyCup Playoffs rookie scoring record." The NHL said.
They added, "Quinn Hughes can become the third U.S.-born player in NHL history to captain a Stanley Cup-winning team, joining Dusting Brown (x2) and Derian Hatcher."
It's been a fantastic season so far for the Canucks captain as he's set a new career-high in goals and points. Entering Sunday's action, Hughes has appeared in 73 games this season where he's tallied 81 points (13 goals, 68 assists), 34 penalty minutes and is a plus-39.
There's no doubt that Quinn Hughes is the front-runner for the Norris Trophy this season, which is handed out annually to the league's best defenceman. Other potential nominees could include Colorado's Cale Makar and New York's Noah Dobson.
