Reporter Shares When Vancouver Canucks Top Prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki Could Be Called Up
A reporter has shared his thoughts on when Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Vancouver's top prospect, could be called up from the American Hockey League.
The Abbotsford Canucks, American Hockey League affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, are off to a hot start to the 2024-25 season and a huge reason for their success is the play of top prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
Through six games this season, the Tullinge, Sweden native has six points (four goals, two assists), which is good enough for the team lead right now, with Aatu Raty being called up yesterday.
When could we see Jonathan Lekkerimaki in Vancouver?
The recent call up of Aatu Raty has many wondering when Jonathan Lekkerimaki's time will come to play in the National Hockey League. For his development, the Canucks don't want to rush him and put the young prospect in a bad position, but given how well he's playing so far this season, he's going to be brought up sooner rather than later.
David Quadrelli of Canucks Army took a look at when Jonathan Lekkerimaki could be called up to Vancouver and despite his strong play, it might not be for a little while.
Quadrelli says with the impending return of Dakota Joshua to the lineup, as well as Pius Suter taking on a bigger role, there isn't a whole lot of room for Jonathan Lekkerimkai right now, but he'll definitely be up in the National Hockey League later on this season.
"With Dakota Joshua about to return, it's safe to say that the Canucks' top six will be pretty crowded for the foreseeable future. Pius Suter is getting a look with Elias Pettersson and Conor Garland starting tonight, and Joshua could certainly also soon find himself in the running for that spot." Quadrelli said.
He added, "So should the Canucks call up Jonathan Lekkerimäki? Not yet, barring an injury or a lacklustre top six winger. But later this season? The Canucks' top prospect is almost certainly coming, and he's going to be a nice addition to this lineup when he lands in Vancouver." Whenever Jonathan Lekkerimaki arrives in Vancouver - whether it's before Christmas or in March - he's going to be an important piece of this roster for a very long time, however it makes sense to keep him down in the American Hockey League for a little while longer.
