The Vancouver Canucks weren't the biggest spenders on July 1, a day that saw saw over a billion dollars in contracts handed out, but their marquee signing of Jake Debrusk could be a good one.

DeBrusk hit a career high 27 goals and 50 points two seasons ago, but on the Canucks Army podcast, host David Quadrelli says he thinks the 27 year old has another level - a little like another forward acquired by the Canucks.
I think this is going to be a high value add for them, I think it's going to be one of the very few contracts that you can sign on free agency where you end up getting surplus value... I think Jake DeBrusk is going to have a JT Miller like rise in Vancouver.

When the Canucks traded for Miller, the move was questioned by many, but he's proven to be an elite forward since coming to Vancouver, and Quadrelli says DeBrusk can do the same.
Miller was one year younger than DeBrusk is now when he joined the Canucks and, while Miller had shown a bit more offence at the NHL level, their numbers before joining the Canucks are not dissimilar. In Boston, Debrusk was used in a smaller role and was therefore given less opportunities. The plan in Vancouver is to play him alongside Elias Pettersson where he'll have plenty of opportunities to show his worth.
If Quadrelli's right, the Canucks will have added a soon to be 30 goal scorer for what could be a HUGE discount.
