In a mid Friday roster move, the Canucks are bringing up forwards Max Sasson and Phil Di Giuseppe, and defenceman Guillaume Brisebois.
The two forwards were sent to the AHL just two days ago along with Linus Karlsson, which resets their waiver eligibility, while Brisebrois joins the NHL squad for the first time this season.
Brisebrois becomes the 8th defenceman on the Canucks active roster, so while he may not see game action it's interesting to see him get the call up over Mark Friedman who has seen game action this year, or Elias Pettersson who is among the team's top defensive prospects.
The 27 year old has 1 point in 23 AHL games this season, and is a UFA at season's end.
Phil DiGiuseppe, the NHL/AHL journeyman, has gotten his first taste of NHL action in the last three games and added two assists against Ottawa, he's been limited to 7 games total between the NHL and AHL due to injury.
24 year old Max Sasson has added a respectable 5 points in 12 NHL games and last played in a 3-2 loss to Utah on December 18.
While the Canucks are not shy to make moves early and often, as evidenced by last season's flurry of activity, they would rather stay away from dealing top prospects like Jonathan Lekkerimäki and Tom Willander.
That may make a youngster like Nils Hoglander available in a trade for a defensive upgrade which, consequently, will open up a depth forward role.
The Canucks have tried a number of forwards in their bottom six, from youngsters like Lekkerimäki and Aatu Räty to veterans like Di Giuseppe and the now jettisoned Daniel Sprong.
If depth players like Di Giuseppe and Sasson can prove they can be every night players, the Canucks may be more easily able to move on from a player like Hoglander.
