5 Years After Being Fired By Hockey Night In Canada, Don Cherry's New Statement Stirs Up Controversy
Even though it seems just like yesterday, it has been a whole 5 years since the polarizing coaches corner host, Don Cherry was fired by Hockey Nigh in Canada for his comments about the Poppy.
Don Cherry is not one to back down for a political view or certain morals, and 5 years later, he holds no regrets about his comments, in fact, he doubled down on them again today.
Grapes issued a strongly worded message to all of the hockey fans and citizens of Canada, emphasizing that Canadians need to do more to appreciate the sacrifices that were made by the veterans who fought and defended our country.
He stated that this generation does not show the gratitude, even with the most basic gesture like wearing a poppy.
"I don't see any change," said Cherry with sadness in his voice. "You go downtown you don't see any poppies."
Back in 2019, was when Don Cherry would part ways with Coach's Corner' after he went on about his controversial plea about Canadians needing to wear poppies to acknowledge the importance of Remembrance Day. - Bowman
Still 5 years later, he shows absolutely no regret for his comments, which, in reality, was not that controversial.
"I have no regrets about the poppy," answered Cherry when asked about whether or not he had any regrets.
One thing he disclosed which surprised many was that he admitted that he wished that the situation that caused his departure was handled differently, that he regrets not being able to sit on the panel and have fun doing what he loved most.
"I have regrets when I see the guys on television and I think of the fun I could have had," said Cherry. "I could have gone on for another couple of years, but it was time to go."
All in all, his views have not changed, and he concluded his message urging all Canadians to go buy and wear a poppy, to show your support for those who have fought for the freedoms we get to enjoy.
