Vancouver Canucks Back-Up Goalie Arturs Silovs Reveals True Feelings On Being Sent Down to the AHL
Vancouver Canucks current back-up goalie, Arturs Silovs is having himself a year to forget already, and with a recent assignment to the AHL to get some more reps under his belt, he has finally commented on what it was like being sent down.
When Thatcher Demko went down in the playoffs last season, it was 23-year-old Silovs that came in with basically no NHL experience to try and save their bacon. He did a masterful job, it was fully believed that he would be the bonified starter if Demko was still out with a knee injury come this season.
Unfortunately for Silovs, general manager Patrik Allvin was able to sign Kevin Lankinen in the offseason, and by everyone's surprise, he has become one of, if not the hottest goalie in all of hockey.
Arturs Silovs of course didn't help his cause in the slightest either as he basically forced the hand of Rick Tocchet's to start Lankinen over him.
Arturs Silovs comments on being sent down to the AHL Abbotsford Canucks
In 3 Starts this season for the Canucks, Silovs has been one of the worst goalies stats wise. He holds an 0-2-1 record, a 4.77 goals against average and an abysmal .808 save percentage.
With his early season struggles and a lack of playing time, the Canucks sent him own for an assignment in order to get some live reps.
Today, the Canucks recalled him and he has finally commented to the media to talk about his demotion.
"It was great to get some game action. Great win...Have to be ready and take the opportunity."
All in all, with how good Kevin Lankinen has been, it is slim chance Silovs will work his way back to being the starter, but, his assignment did him a lot of good for when he needs to come in on the rare start.
He was given the start in Abbotsford Canucks 4-2 win against the Bakersfield Condors, where he looked very solid, stopping 23 out of 25 shots for a .920 SV%.
Hopefully this rehab start gave him some much needed confidence to dominate in net like he did in the 2023-2024 playoffs.
