HOT: Surprising Right-Handed D-man on the trade block in New Jersey
The Devils have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL since the season began in September. With their young core gaining experience by the minute, you'd expect them to try hard for a deep playoff run, but it seems like of their pending UFA d-man may be on the move.
28-year-old defenseman Damon Severson's contract is coming off to an end. He currently carries a $4.16M AAV and everything is pointing toward a contract negotiation discord that may lead to a deadline trade. The Devils have drafted Simon Nemec with the 2nd overall pick making Severson expendable for future years. Nemec has been dominant in the AHL and once he comes back from the World Juniors could definitely take Severson's spot.
Severson is a 6'2'' and 205-pound d-man, and would definitely fill a need on the Canucks' roster. His game's definitely well adjusted to today's game and would ultimately benefit the Canucks' strong offensive game plan. Here's what the scouting report had on him:
''He brings size, a strong two-way game, and some toughness. He is showing that he has an offensive side from the point or as the jump-up guy. A good skater with a bit of speed, but what stands out is how good he is at playing the defensive part of his game.''
- Bill Placzek, Draft Site
The defenseman had a career-high 46 points in 80 games, up to this point this season he has 6 points in 35 games. The Devils will definitely look to add to their group ahead of the playoffs, should Allvin make the call for the very needed right-hand defenseman?
