But for the Vancouver Canucks, the area they lack depth in the most is between the pipes. In the organization right now, other than Demko, they have Arturs Silovs, who's having an incredible IIHF World Championship, Spencer Martin and Nikita Tolopilo, who signed at the end of March. All three mentioned above are under contract for the 2023-24 season, while Collin Delia will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
If the Canucks want to win the Stanley Cup anytime soon, they'll need to add a veteran goaltender in the free agent or trade market or hope that one of the netminders in the organization steps up.
When the Colorado Avalanche lifted the Stanley Cup in 2022, they needed both their goaltenders, Darcy Kuemper and Pavel Francouz, to reach the pinnacle of the sport and win their third championship in franchise history.
Flash forward to this year and two of three teams remaining have needed to use two goaltenders. The Florida Panthers have been rolling with the current Conn Smythe Trophy favourite in Sergei Bobrovksy, but it was in fact Alex Lyon who started the first three games of their opening round series against the Boston Bruins.
The Vegas Golden Knights have relied on Adin Hill, but Laurent Brossoit started every game of their first round sweep of the Winnipeg Jets, as well as the first two games of their second round series against the Edmonton Oilers.
If Allvin and the Canucks decide to go down the free agency route to look for a veteran backup, there will be plenty of options, but it'll come down to what's the maximum their willing to spend.
Jonathan Quick, Cam Talbot, Semyon Varlamov, Antti Raanta and Martin Jones are all set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st and likely won't command a salary that'll break the bank.
