According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Stanley Cup champion and Olympic gold medal-winning head coach Mike Babcock is returning behind the bench in the National Hockey League.

Dreger said that the Columbus Blue Jackets will be hiring Mike Babcock to be the team's next head coach but that the holdup on making the announcement is because of his contract with the Maple Leafs not ending until late-June.

"Speculation around the Memorial Cup is Mike Babcock will return to the NHL as @BlueJacketsNHL new coach and the delay in announcing coincides with his existing contract with the Maple Leafs expiring the end of this month." Dreger said in a tweet.

Babcock, 60, has been out of the National Hockey League for just over three-and-a-half years now after being fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in November 2019.

During his time as a head coach in the National Hockey League with Anaheim, Detroit and Toronto, Babcock has 700 wins, 418 losses, 19 ties and 164 overtime/shootout losses in 1,301 career games. His 700 wins are the 12th-most by any coach in NHL history.

The Manitouwadge (Ontario) native won the Stanley Cup in 2008 with the Detroit Red Wings and also has a pair of Olympic gold medals to his name from 2010 and 2014.
