REPORT | New York Insider links the Canucks and Rangers to a blockbuster deal involving Alexis Lafreniere
The Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers could potentially come together this summer for a massive trade that would benefit both teams.
In a recent article on The Athletic, Arthur Staple says that the Canucks and Rangers could work on a deal featuring Conor Garland and 2020 first-overall pick Alexis Lafrenière. Staple adds that the Canucks would likely have to retain a portion of Garland's salary to make it work.
"If there's a player on this list that the Rangers could acquire in a straightforward way, it's the 27-year-old Garland. He's a decent scorer and a pain in the ass to play against, which makes him a decent fit on the Rangers plus he's a right-shot winger, which they have exactly one of right now. Drury would have to get Vancouver, which is already in cap hell for next season, to eat a portion of Garland's cap hit and the likeliest return would be Alexis Lafrenière." Staple said.
He added, "The connect-the-dots rumor mill has the Canucks interested in Lafrenière, likely due to the presence of his former agent, assistant GM Emilie Castonguay, in the front office. If (big if) Drury is ready to move on from the 2020 No. 1 pick, this might be the simplest way to go about it while also acquiring a player the Rangers could use."
A Garland-Lafrenière swap would benefit both teams quite well. The Rangers would be getting a top-six forward with the potential to put up 20+ goals and 50 points, while the Canucks would get a young forward with top-line potential, who's age fits in well with what Allvin and his group are trying to build in Vancouver.
Lafrenière, 21, is coming off the best season of his National Hockey League career thus far while playing on 'The Kid Line' with Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko. In 81 games, the Saint-Eustache native had 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists), 33 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten.
