Damon Severson, the highly coveted right-handed shot defenseman, was a pending unrestricted free agent in New Jersey. The Devils' GM came up big as he's traded the rights to his defenseman.

The announcement just came in. Damon Severson has been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets and signed to a massive 8 years and $50M ($6.25M AAV$) deal.

'Damon Severson is joining the #CBJ in a sign-and-trade with #NJDevils after agreeing to an eight-year contract, per sources.

Another pending UFA comes off CJ's Big Board.''

The Devils will receive a 3rd Round Draft Selection in this year's draft as compensation.

'#njdevils are receiving a 2023 3rd round pick (Calgary's) in exchange for facilitating the sign and trade of Severson.

Currently slated to be No. 80 overall. #CBJ got Calgary pick via #SeaKraken.''

The Blue Jackets have taken a big step Last couple of days, acquiring Ivan Provorov from the Flyers and now Damon Severson. With their recent moves, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to move their 3rd Overall Pick in this year's draft for immediate help.

This move takes a potential target off the board for the Canucks. However, it's good news because Allvin shouldn't have considered paying Severson that much. Severson will turn 29 in August and be under contract until he's almost 37. This deal has the potential to age poorly.
