The Rangers had been reported earlier this season to have interest in the Canucks' high-scoring winger Brock Boeser, and there may be a match there since the Rangers could be benefiting from their needs. Here's the proposal that was drawn up:
To the New York Rangers
- Brock Boeser
- 2024 4th Round Selection (NJD)
To the Vancouver Canucks
- Alexis Lafreniere
- Barclay Goodrow
The Rangers will be looking to add some firepower if Tarasenko and Kane walk to free agency, and for the Canucks this could hardly be coming at a better time. Goodrow has three more years under his current deal, which gives him an annual $3.64M. He's an experienced centerman who's won the cup in Tampa Bay and who'd be a great asset on the penalty kill. Lafreniere, on the other end, needs a change of scenery to break out. The former 1st overall pick has not yet lived up to the expectations, and he'll be an RFA by July 1st. Canucks could ink him into a bridge deal to see how he performs.
While some may be expecting a bigger return for Boeser, his trade value is at an all-time low for various reasons. His incapacity to play a full season, his latest underwhelming performances, and the contract following him. Unless the Canucks want to retain his money, this may be one of the best deals we get for this guy. In the long-term, Boeser is still very young, and he could be inclined to bounce back with a different team, and so could Lafreniere. Is this a bet you'd be willing to take?
