The Hurricanes finally found a way to satisfy the Czech's expectations in terms of role and money as they reach an agreement on a two-year deal worth $13M.
On the Daily Faceoff Podcast however, Frank Seravalli revealed that the Canes had received two legitimate trade offers, one they turned down, and the other Necas simply refused to sign there. The Jets offered to trade to former first round picks in Ruther McGroarty and Come Perfetti, but the Canes declined.
Perfetti, 22, was the 10th overall pick in the 2020 Draft. He had 19 goals and 19 assists in 71 NHL games in 2023-2024. McGroarty, 20, was selected 14th in the 2022. He's considered as one of the top collegiate player in the NCAA, could've turn pro at the end of the 2022-2023 season but he wants nothing to do with the Jets.
Prior to the draft, the Canucks were considered as a possible landing spot for Martin Necas, but as things evolved they eventually fell out of the race and seeing what the other teams offered, there's no way the Canucks would've been ready to give up Nils Hoglander, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and another asset to make it happen.
Perhaps the Hurricanes should've taken the deal, Necas seemingly signed due to his restricted free agent status and he could be out of Carolina in two years.
