Oilers make a steal and acquire former ninth overall pick from the Sabres
The NHL's has been quiet for some days now, but the Stanley Cup finalist, the Edmonton Oilers have been working and a trade made it to the end line.
The announcement was just made that the Oilers had acquired the former ninth overall pick and WHL standout, Matthew Savoie. Savoie was the 9th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and had not yet made his NHL debut. The Sabres will be receiving depth forward Ryan McLeod and prospect Tyler Tullio.
🔁 TRADE 🔁
The #Oilers have acquired forward Matthew Savoie from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Ryan McLeod & forward Tyler Tullio.
Savoie, a skilled right handed shot centerman, collected 71 points in 35 WHL games this season and added 24 points in 19 playoffs games. McLeod on the other hand, just had a career best season collecting 30 points in 81 NHL games.
This deal sure seems weird, insiders have even pointed out that some believe that Savoie may be as good as McLeod already. It will be extremely interesting to see how this deal develops in the next few years, but for now, it looks like a heck of a steal from the Oilers' management.
#Oilers and #Sabres started talking about this deal last Friday, Round 1 at Draft and kept dialogue going.
Interesting deal, that's for sure. McLeod has speed to burn, fits in with what Buffalo is building. Some think Savoie, an Edmonton native, may already be as good as McLeod
