The Arizona Coyotes have heard their name in relocation rumours for years now, but with options dwindling to keep them in the state, it's becoming a realistic possibility that they get moved.

Last week, the Coyotes found out that their application to participate in an auction for a piece of land in North Phoenix was approved and it is expected that the auction will take place at some point in the middle of June.

If the Coyotes' attempt to win the auction becomes unsuccessful, then relocation is on the table, with Salt Lake City and Houston mentioned as potential landing spots for the organization.

During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman dived into the Coyotes' situation and confirmed that relocation will be on the table if the auction for a 95-acre plot in North Phoenix doesn't go their way.

"(It's unclear) what the timeline would be if they do win it, and how long it would take," he added. "As a result of that, especially if the Coyotes don't win the auction, relocation will be on the table."

Over the years, the National Hockey League has done more to Coyotes in Arizona than they did to keep the Nordiques in Quebec, Whalers in Hartford and Thrashers in Atlanta. Hockey fans are frustrated with how many chances the league continues to give the Coyotes, while others in the past have gotten the short end of the stick.

If the Coyotes' bid for the land in Phoenix is unsuccessful, relocation has to happen immediately and they should be moved to somewhere like Houston or Salt Lake City, that has a large arena ready to host an NHL team.
