Charlie McAvoy Ruled Out For Final Against Canada After Being Taken to Hospital Late Monday Night
Team USA was without star defenseman Charlie McAvoy for Monday's round robin finale against Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off and new information has come to light as to why he didn't play.
The United States rolled through their first two games of the 4 Nations Face-Off,
including a rough game against Canada on Saturday night, but injuries caught up to them on Monday as they fell to the Swedes by a score of 2-1.
Auston Matthews,
Matthew Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy were all sidelined on Monday night with injuries, and it was unclear how serious the upper-body injury for the Bruins defenseman was, until things took a sudden turn.
According to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital last night, hours after USA head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters he was dealing with an upper-body injury.
"Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Mass. General Hospital Monday night as Team USA was battling Team Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off at TD Garden, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed." McBride said.
Flash forward to Tuesday morning and Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff has revealed some new information as to why Charlie McAvoy was admitted into hospital.
According to Seravalli, sources say that Charlie McAvoy was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital due to an infection that stemmed from an injury he's been dealing with.
"Sources say Team USA 🇺🇸 defenseman Charlie McAvoy was admitted to the hospital on Monday night with an infection that stemmed from a minor injury.
He is fine and there is no long-term concern. McAvoy's status for Thursday's final is undetermined, he has not been ruled out." Seravalli said.
Originally not ruled out, the Boston Bruins have just released a statement saying McAvoy will miss the final against Canada.
The #NHLBruins have issued the following update on Charlie McAvoy.
McAvoy, 27, has appeared in two games for the Americans at the 4 Nations Face-Off where he's been held point-less and is a plus-one.
